Alpha Brain works mainly through the cholinergic system. Alpha-GPC delivers choline that the body uses to build acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter most associated with memory and learning, while Huperzine A slows the enzyme that breaks acetylcholine down. L-theanine and L-tyrosine act as amino-acid precursors that support calm focus and dopamine synthesis, and Bacopa monnieri is an adaptogenic herb studied for memory consolidation over weeks of use.
Qualia Mind attacks cognition from many directions at once. Citicoline and Alpha-GPC feed acetylcholine production; Acetyl-L-Carnitine and PQQ target mitochondrial energy; Ginkgo biloba supports cerebral blood flow; Rhodiola and other adaptogens buffer stress; and 100mg of caffeine paired with 200mg of L-theanine provides immediate, relatively smooth stimulation. The breadth is the selling point and also the main critique.
Onnit's own randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial (2016) reported improvements in verbal recall and executive function versus placebo in healthy adults. Independent evidence for individual components is moderate: Bacopa has meta-analytic support for speed of attention with 12+ weeks of use, and L-theanine plus caffeine has repeatedly improved attention in controlled studies. The blend has not been independently replicated, so treat it as promising rather than proven.
Individual ingredients have real support: citicoline for memory and attention, the caffeine plus L-theanine combination for acute focus, and Bacopa for attention speed over weeks. However, there is no published trial on the specific 28-ingredient Qualia Mind formula, and many of those ingredients appear at doses below what their own studies used. The reliable, felt effect is largely the caffeine/L-theanine pairing.
Most people tolerate Alpha Brain well. The most commonly reported effects are headache, vivid dreams (linked to the cholinergic ingredients), and mild stomach upset if taken on an empty stomach. Stop and consult a clinician if you notice jaw tension, muscle twitching, or persistent nausea.
Because of the 100mg caffeine, jitteriness, a racing heart, and insomnia are the most common complaints, especially if taken in the afternoon. The large 7-capsule serving can also cause nausea on an empty stomach. Take it early in the day with food, or choose the caffeine-free version, and start at a partial dose to assess tolerance.
As of May 2026, $34.95 for 30 capsules (15 servings) or $79.95 for 90 capsules (45 servings) direct from Onnit, with roughly 15% off through Subscribe & Save. Prices on Amazon and at Walmart fluctuate around these figures.

Marketed to healthy adults seeking focus and memory support. Not for anyone under 18, pregnant or breastfeeding, or taking acetylcholinesterase inhibitors or other cholinergic medications. Check with a clinician first if you take prescription drugs.
For healthy adults comfortable with caffeine and a large multi-ingredient supplement. Not for under-18s, pregnant or breastfeeding people, those with heart-rhythm issues, or anyone sensitive to stimulants. A caffeine-free version exists for evening use. Consult a clinician if you take prescription medication.
Qualia Mind: Qualia Mind is the maximalist option: 28 ingredients, a caffeine kick, and a price to match. It can deliver a noticeable same-day lift thanks to its caffeine and L-theanine, but you are paying premium money for a formula whose blend has never been tested as a whole. On balance, Onnit Alpha Brain edges ahead in our scoring, but the right choice depends on your situation.
