Medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) is a rare cancer of the parafollicular C cells of the thyroid. All GLP-1 receptor agonists carry an FDA black-box warning contraindicating use in patients with personal or family history of MTC or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2). The warning is based on rodent studies; human relevance is uncertain.
